4 Wheel Drift (remix)

In 2004, "Four-Wheel Drift" was performed at Interactive Futures Conference, Victoria; for the nonTVTVstation, Splintermind, Stockholm, sponsored by the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art; in 2005, for Elektra Festival, Montreal and Pace Digital Gallery, New York and in 2006 Earshot for Interactive Futures 06, Victoria.

Four Wheel Drift (remix) is a spectacular multimedia performance loosely based on the Situationist tactic of the derive and the Japanese counterculture sport of drifting. This work celebrates the car. In various cities, the performance team drives around the city with a local guide. As the car cruises the city, sounds from the enclosed environment of the car are recorded, such as ambient music, conversations and engine sounds. Cameras provide touristic/voyeuristic video imagery of the city from within the hermetic space of the car. Sensors measure the actions of the driver, such as brake frequency and pressure, rotation of steering wheel and so on.

This collected information becomes the source used by custom software to generate live video panoramas and a soundscape during the (remix) performance. The sound and video compostitions are networked, so as to integrate and synthesise the data collected by the car, the actions of the performers within the overarching structure provided by the software.
