One is part of a series of text paintings that examines tensions,
potentials and collisions between the real and the virtual in
the contemporary construction of identity through numbers. The
research for this body of work involved accessing individuals’
private information, such as date of birth, credit card numbers
and so on. In order to protect the privacy of this information,
some numbers were randomly transposed. The representation of this
private information in the public context of an art object creates
a tension that refers to the digital potential for multiple identities,
identity theft, artist as thief and viewer as thief. This work
is shown at Evolutions, an Emily Carr Alumni Exhibition
in August 2005.
