In:visible
is a sound installation that makes audible the usually inaudible/invisible
plethora of electromagnetic waves that immerse us. Found samples
of such invisible electro-magnetic occurances include natural
sources such as the sun and stars, as well as man-made sources
such as power lines, sockets and wireless devices. In:visible
uses the usually invisible flow of network traffic to generate
real time "live" compositions through interactive open
source software, so that the network traffic becomes the "performer".
Our intention is to make this invisible material an embodied aural
experience for the listener, and to activate the physical installation
space.
Technology has been both a material and a conceptual driver behind
the realization of In:visible. Conceptually, technology
is often invisible/inaudible. Materially, technology simultaneously
creates electromagnetic waves and enables their recording. The
Internet provides the found source samples, parts of the open
source interactive software as well as the network flow analysis
software, and indeed the flow of network traffic itself. As artists
we wanted to post-produce these elements, to create a sonic architecture
that would draw the listeners’ attention to these invisible
but present emissions in an embodied way.
