Option 1: Take out at least top half of brick backing (or all of it) to fit new pipe back up through existing chimney.
Option 2: Install new black piping and chimney up through roof above the stove. This is about half the price of Option 1 (but still expensive!!!).
Guys came today and removed the old pipe.

Note: the
brick backing is not required for safety.
It is possible to be removed or refinished (ex. Painted) … but then
how does it fit in with the rest of the interior? Option 1 would involve such work.

Option 2 is taking the pipe straight up and out the
roof. This leaves the choice to
just leave the brick backing as is.
This is the old look.
